Graduate (Professional Phase) Admission

Students who hold a bachelor's degree in Speech-Language Pathology or a related discipline may apply to the six semester Master of Science degree program. Applicants are eligible for direct admission to the graduate program provided they have an undergraduate degree in the discipline (e.g., speech-language pathology, communication sciences and disorders) that included the course work listed below or if they have earned an undergraduate degree outside the discipline and have completed the following course work or their equivalents:

Introduction to Communication Sciences and Disorders
Normal Speech and Language Development
Anatomy and Physiology of Speech and Hearing
Phonetics (IPA transcription)
Speech Science
Introduction to Biostatistics
Introduction to Psychology

To meet national certification requirements of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), prospective professional phase students must have completed coursework in: biological science, physical science, social science, and mathematics (statistics preferred).

Applicants wanting to earn Pennsylvania teacher certification also must have completed special education courses equivalent to GSPED 611: Persons with Disabilities and GSPED 663: Educational Assessment: Special Education . These courses can be completed as overloads during the first two semesters of graduate study.

The department is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Our teacher certification program has been approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education and the National Council For Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE)

Applications to the Speech-Language Pathology graduate program must be submitted on-line through the Communication Sciences and Disorders Centralized Application Service (CSDCAS). Applications may be submitted through July 1, 2009; however, we offer rolling admission beginning with applications completed by January 23, 2009.

Applicants must submit all university/college transcripts, GRE scores, three letters of recommendation and a personal statement discussing personal and academic background, professional goals and any information that will help in the application evaluation.
