Speech Production Error

Beth, a six year-old child, has difficulty learning the rules for pronouncing sounds. What if the errors are not corrected? The impact on Beth and her family cannot be underestimated.

Will every teacher and other students understand what Beth is saying?

If understanding Beth is hard, will teachers and other students treat her differently?

Could these changes in interactions impact Beth’s learning or social development in school?

Will Beth’s speech affect interpersonal relationships at home, in the neighborhood, with her extended family?

The questions can go on and on. If Beth receives appropriate speech-language pathology services the speech problems might be easily corrected, thus preventing the cascade of potential educational, social and psychological fall-out.
