Taylor, a 21-year-old college student, suffers a head
injury and brain damage during a traffic accident.
Now, among other problems, she has difficulties
recalling words, organizing her thoughts, understanding
complex spoken language, and remembering things
that she has done and people she has met.
Will she be able to
return to classes, finish her degree, and get
a great job?
Will her friends be steadfast if they are unable
to talk to her the way they used to?
She had recently met a guy and they had gone out
a couple of times. What will happen to that relationship?
Speech-language therapy focuses
on helping this young woman recover as much language,
speech, and cognitive abilities as possible, and
to develop strategies for dealing with residual
problems. Although Taylor might have some cognitive-communicative
problems that just won’t go away, speech-language
therapy can help her achieve the maximum level
of function possible.
