Neuroscience: Cognition, Physiology, Neurology

The essential control mechanism for all anatomy, physiology, cognition, speech, language, hearing and swallowing functions is the brain. Accidents, illnesses or disease processes can damage the brain in ways that interfere with function. Speech-language pathologists must have a thorough understanding of the body, brain and nervous system to understand the impact of brain damage on communication, which includes speech, language, hearing, swallowing, and cognition. Then speech-language pathologists can help patients communicate and swallow in spite of their deficits.
