Approximately half of all speech-language pathologists
work with children in school systems. As part
of the special education team it is imperative
that speech-language pathologists understand the
school environment, know about education and,
and know how to work with teachers and other special
education professionals. The ability to be a member
of a student's educational team is critical to
that student's success. The goal of speech-language
pathology is not to simply help a child overcome
a specific speech or language problem, but to
effectively use improved communication skills
to better learn and to better socially integrate
with his or her peers.
