The Academic Education Program

The Speech-Language Pathology program at Duquesne University includes two separate, consecutive phases:

  • A three-year Pre-professional Phase curriculum (six semesters). This includes University core requirements plus coursework selected to provide students with a broad liberal arts education, a strong basis in the sciences, and critical thinking skills to allow the successful completion of the professional phase.

  • A two-year Professional Phase curriculum (six consecutive semesters, including two summers). Students focus on advanced graduate-level education leading to acquisition of the specialized knowledge and skills required to become a nationally certified Speech-Language Pathologist.

Students who enter the program as undergraduates will earn a Bachelor of Sciences in Health Sciences degree after completing the first two semesters of the Professional Phase Curriculum. They, along with students in the program who already hold a Bachelors degree, will receive their Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology four semesters later.

Students completing the pre-professional and professional phases of the program at Duquesne University will automatically be eligible to apply for Teacher Certification. Students having completed their undergraduate at another university may elect to complete the two pre-professional courses required for teacher certification.
