The Clinical Education Program

Students integrate classroom learning with clinical experience starting at the beginning of the professional phase of the SLP program. The first three semesters of clinical experience take place in the Duquesne University Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic, located in the heart of the department on the fourth floor of Fisher Hall. The Clinic provides speech-language pathology and limited audiology services to the greater Pittsburgh area, offering students the opportunity to work with a diverse population, a wide range of communication disorders, and the spectrum of age groups. All clinical experiences are fully supervised in accordance with certification standards set by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

  • Semester I-SLP 440w Clinic I: Faculty members provide extensive guidance. Clinical experiences are structured to lay the foundations of clinical practice through the development of clinical skills and competencies.

  • Semester II-SLP 441w Clinic II, and Semester III-SLP 542 Clinic III: Students assume larger clinical caseloads and are given greater responsibilities for planning and implementing assessment and treatment sessions.

  • Semester IV-SLP 543 and Semester V-SLP 544 Clinic V: Students participate in off-campus clinical education experiences. Each semester students spend four full days per week at a clinical site. These experiences provide students with long-term, comprehensive, and in-depth clinical education.

  • Semester VI-SLP 545 Clinici VI: This third off-campus clinical experience encompasses three full days per week for the duration of the semester.

Graduates of this program typically greatly exceed the minimum clinical experience standards for student clinical practice established by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
