Learning Objectives: Class Five
ASHA's Code of Ethics

We continue to examine ASHA's Code of Ethics focusing on Principles Two (attaining and maintaining professional competence), Three (meeting our responsibilities to the public), and Four (guiding our relationships with colleagues and other professionals) of the Code of Ethics.

It is vitally important that you be familiar enough with the Code to identify potential infractions and locate specific principles and rules that may be violated. Classes four and five are intended to familiarize you with the Code and begin to appreciate how it applies to everyday practice of the profession. An annotated version of the ASHA Code of Ethics is provided to help understand situations in which the rules of ethics play out in practice.

From these two classes (four and five), we are also interested in seeing how ASHA has interpreted the fundamental principles of ethics (studied in class three) into the Code of Ethics for speech-language pathologists and audiologists.

After classes four and five, you should be able to identify the principles and rules of ethics from a scenario. Remember, your final exam will be composed of a number of ethical scenarios; let that guide your study.
