| Learning Objectives: Class Six The most recent, and perhaps most sweeping, updates to the ASHA Code of Ethics resulted from reports of SLP research done in the 1930s which had unfortunate consequences for many of the subjects studied. This class session considers the impact of (less than ethical) research by reading and discussing the true story of the SLP student whose thesis research project lead to her being referred to as a monster by the subjects who were negatively impacted by her work. It is intended to highlight the need to protect all research subjects, but particularly those drawn from vulnerable populations. The steps that have been put in place by the scientific community to safeguard both subjects and researchers will be reviewed. © Rentschler, 2008 |
