This site is designed as a resource for clinicians interested in stuttering therapy for adults and adolescents. My overall approach to therapy directs clients through three primary components of stuttering intervention: (1) becoming better able to manage existing stuttering behaviors [stuttering modification], (2) learning new, fluency-embedded speaking behaviors [fluency shaping], and (3) re-adjusting feelings, attitudes, and emotions that have developed in response to stuttering. The first two components address the overt aspects of stuttering, and the third, the covert aspects. While speaking fluently is a goal of almost all people who stutter, it is but one facet of the total problem. Stuttering is loaded with complexities and each person experiences it uniquely. Consequently, therapy cannot be a "one size fits all" proposition. Effective clinician's must evaluate each client's experience with their stuttering and adapt the treatment principles to the needs of the individual.
