Kristin Harner - Boyertown, PA

“I’m a very outgoing person and enjoy all aspects of the field, whether it's working with children or adults. I love seeing patients smile.”

Speech-language pathology was an easy choice for Kristin, who learned about the profession at Boyertown High School as part of her Anatomy and Physiology course. “I shadowed occupational therapists, physical therapists and speech-language pathologists and made my choice from that field trip,” she recalled.

A varsity athlete and honor student throughout high school, Kristin found Duquesne had just what she was looking for—- a program that allowed her to combine her interests in sports and the sciences. “I was offered an athletic scholarship for lacrosse here and entered the five-year program in SLP. I’ve worked extremely hard to balance athletics and academics and was able to maintain quality grades and still have fun in college.”

And when the pressure was on, Kristin found she could count on the SLP faculty. “I’ve made many friends in this major. During the times when we are stressed and when things besides class and clinic aren't going so well, a lot the professors were really supportive and understanding through it all. They are great resources and support systems.”

Kristin, says the SLP program has helped her achieve confidence as a professional. “I feel I’ve demonstrated appropriate skills and professionalism as a clinician, and that has helped me feel more confident in the grades I receive, because I am confident in what I can do as an SLP.” Following graduation, she hopes to work in an outpatient therapy setting with children.
