Students often come to you for academic and career
advice. Is Speech-Language Pathology (SLP)
a good option for any of your students?
SLP is a profession that makes a difference
in people’s lives. Speech-language pathologists
work with people of all ages—individually,
in conjunction with families, or in small
groups—who have communication problems
or swallowing disorders.
In our experience, SLP may be a good fit
for the following types of students:
-
Those who express an aptitude
and interest in psychology, sociology, English,
or other humanities. Linguistics (syntax,
semantics, morphology, etc.) is the foundation
for helping children who have developmental
language disorders or mental retardation and
for helping adults who have compromised language
abilities after a stroke or other head injury.
Understanding cognition, how people think,
how they behave, and how they interact with
others and society is critical to helping
people of all ages who have impaired communication.
-
Those who express an aptitude
or interest in biology, physics, or other
sciences. Knowledge of basic principles of
physics (especially properties of waves) is
critical to understanding speech production
(vocal fold vibration, vocal tract filtering
of sound, etc.) and auditory processing (hearing,
sound segmentation, etc.). This information
allows speech-language pathologists to diagnose
and treat children and adults who have compromised
speech production and or auditory systems,
as well as understand the technology used
to measure speech and hearing.
-
Those who are seeking
a career with excellent job prospects, flexibility,
a wide range of employment options, advancement
opportunities, an opportunity to help people
and truly make a difference in their lives,
and a job that is always challenging and interesting.
